Odysseus

Where are
the leaves

headed?

Bounce, tumble
ship-like in one

direction.

Forward motion
away from my

lips like Penelope.

Yes it takes a turn at the end back to the cliché, back to the rather familiar.

I hadn't set out to write an Odyssey poem. Originally, I used "horse-like" rather than "ship-like." I only changed it to "ship-like" when I finally decided to use Penelope as a generic name in the ending.

Finally, the last thing I did to the poem was title it "Odysseus" so that it all came together thematically. The title is always the last thing to come. Only then do you have a greater understanding of what just happened (how the poem came into being).
